Peng Yonghong Leads a Delegation to Visit Singapore and Malaysia
to Broaden the Channels of International Exchange and Cooperation
In order to deepen the exchanges and cooperation between our university and
universities along the Belt and Road in the fields of education, science and technology,
humanities and other fields, serve and promote the China-ASEAN strategic partnership,
and further enhance the level of internationalization of our university, Peng Yonghong,
the General Secretary of the Party Committee of our University was invited to visit
several universities and enterprises in Singapore and Malaysia from June 17 to 23.
The delegation visited seven universities and two enterprises, including the Asian
Campus of Technical University of Munich, Singapore University of Technology and
Design, University of Glasgow Singapore, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti
Teknologi MARA, Taylor’s University Malaysia and Sunway University.
Commissioned by Markus Waechter, Director of TUM ASIA, Alson Chng, Dean of the
School of Chemical Engineering, Aaron Tan, Assistant Dean of the School of Electronic
Information Engineering and Information Technology, held a discussion and exchange
with the delegation of TUM Asia. Alson Chng introduced TUM ASIA and said that
TUM ASIA's teaching staff, professional Settings and curriculum arrangements fully
meet the relevant standards of the Technical University of Munich, Germany.
At the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), the delegation had a
discussion with John Leong, Director of the SUTD Research Institute, and Kenny Lu,
senior lecturer of the Information Systems Technology and Design Team. John Leong
introduced that SUTD was founded in 2009, is a focus on technology and design both
integration and promotion, adhere to sustainable development, student-centered
(the student to teacher ratio of 11:1), extensive international cooperation of the
research-intensive university. Although the school has been established in a short time,
but now in the world's top engineering universities.
At the University of Glasgow Singapore (UGS) in the United Kingdom, Cindy Goh, Head of
Campus, Keoh Sye Loong, Director of Research and Teaching, and relevant course leaders
met with our delegation. Cindy Goh introduced UGS, as the first overseas branch school
of the University of Glasgow, UGS was founded in 2011, through the deep integration with
the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), Offering undergraduate programs in
computer science, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering,
nursing, etc., it is a small and sophisticated research university with high international
recognition. The principals of computer science, mechanical engineering, civil engineering
and aerospace engineering respectively introduced the main research directions,
industry-university-research cooperation, curriculum Settings, teaching arrangements
and graduates' prospects.
After the visits in Singapore, the delegation went to Malaysia for an exchange visit. At
the National University of Malaysia (UKM), International Relations Coordinator Hanita
Hanim Ismail and others received the delegation. They introduced the history of UKM,
the establishment of disciplines, international influence, well-known alumni and other
basic information, and focuses on the establishment of undergraduate and doctoral
majors, scientific research directions, international cooperation projects, and social
services of the School of Education.
At Universiti Teknologi MARA, Vice Chancellor Shahrin Bin Sahib, Assistant
President and Head of International Affairs Norazida Mohamed, Head of Global Partnerships
Ahmad Naqiyuddin Bakar, Wan Edura Binti Wan Rashid, Director of the Centre of Excellence
in Business Studies, and heads of the Schools of Business, Engineering, Computing,
Information and Mathematics held a panel discussion with the delegation. Shahrin Bin
Sahib warmly welcomed the delegation and said that the meeting between the two
universities has special significance in the context of the high-level celebration of the
50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two
governments. He hopes that the two universities can strengthen practical cooperation
and jointly improve the international education level of the two universities.
During the visit, the delegation conducted comprehensive docking and in-depth
communication on the details of the bilateral joint academic seminar planned to be
held in September this year.
At Taylor’s (TU), the delegation met with President Barry Winn, Executive Dean of the
School of Innovation and Technology David Asirvatham, Dean of the School of Engineering
Sim Yee Wai, Dean of the School of Computing Sayan Kumar Ray, Associate Dean of the
School of Business Pek Chuen Khee and others. Barry Winn extended a sincere welcome
to the delegation and introduced TU's development history, educational philosophy,
the size of teachers and students, the setting of disciplines and specialties, and the
internationalization of education. David Asirvatham introduced the organizational
structure of the School of Innovation and Technology, covering specialties and research
directions. Taking computer science related majors as an example, he gave a detailed
introduction to the teaching mode and talent training characteristics of relevant majors,
saying that TU attaches great importance to industry-university cooperation, and works
closely with more than 100 international and domestic enterprises to create a long-term,
high-intensity and multi-channel internship practice platform for students, and is
committed to cultivating applied and entrepreneurial talents.
At Sunway University (SU), commissioned by Vice-Chancellor Sibrandes Poppema,
Vice-Chancellor Chai Lay Ching, Head of International Affairs Lim Shui Chin, Dean of
School of Engineering and Technology Ng Kok Sum, Deputy Dean Lau Sian Lun,
Chong Ka Leong, acting Dean of the School of Hotel and Service, held a discussion
with the delegation. Chai Lay Ching, on behalf of SU, extended a warm welcome to the
delegation and introduced SU's school history, educational philosophy, international
cooperation network, scientific research direction and development vision. She introduced
the relevant measures of SU in cultivating innovative and entrepreneurial talents, saying that
SU relies on the strong financial strength and diversified industrial structure of Sunway Group,
focuses on smart city, education technology, electronic health technology, food technology,
retail technology, financial technology and other fields, and promotes the formation of
cross-field teachers and students teams, interdisciplinary research and scientific research
results incubation. Based on the good foundation of cooperation between the two
universities, HZU looks forward to further strengthening cooperation in student exchange,
faculty visit, joint project application, innovation and entrepreneurship, scientific research
cooperation and other aspects, and consolidating and deepening the friendly cooperative
relations between the two universities in constantly expanding the fields of exchange and
cooperation.
This year marks the beginning of the second decade of jointly building the Belt and Road
Initiative. This visit will help the university further expand the Belt and Road education
exchange and cooperation network, broaden the channels for international education,
promote the university to strengthen exchanges and deepen cooperation with well-known
universities in Singapore, Malaysia and other countries, build closer relations of exchange
and cooperation, and carry out higher-level exchange and cooperation projects. Add impetus
to the high quality development and construction of the university into a high-level
applied university.
